Santa Fe Auto Sound has seen and experienced plenty of changes over the past 50-plus years. But through them all, what’s allowed us to continue thriving are the things we haven’t changed. Because the fact is, providing exceptional service and cutting-edge products will never go out of style.
The Story of Santa Fe Auto Sound
Founded in 1967
as Mid-Town Auto Sound—originally located at 54th and Troost in Kansas City—we’ve been fortunate enough to become a fixture in the KC metro area for multiple generations of drivers.
(Seriously, ask your dad about us. We just may have helped him with a repair, installation, or custom fabrication back in the 70s.)
You may think a lot has changed since then, and you’d be right. In fact, we’ve been around so long that most cars weren’t even equipped with stereos back then. Many others didn’t even have a designated space for things like radio, tape players, speakers, and antennas.
Just because vehicles didn’t come equipped with these features in the past doesn’t mean there was no demand. But many shops across the area simply did not have the knowledge, skills, or experience needed to perform installation work.
It was around this time that Mid-Town Auto Sound began establishing itself as the go-to experts for car stereo installation in Kansas City. This led to Mid-Town Auto Sound performing extensive installation and car audio services for Kansas City car dealerships—in addition to working on imported vehicles such as MG, Triumph, Fiat, Porsche, Mercedes, Datsun, and Mazda.
In 1977
In 1977 we expanded to a second retail location in Overland Park and opened Santa Fe Auto Sound. Though the Overland Park store experienced great success that still lasts to this day, Mid-Town Auto Sound ultimately closed 5 years later due to decline in the area and other factors.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Santa Fe Auto Sound continued to evolve alongside the car audio industry, which began to introduce auto security, remote start, marine audio, and much more. This era also saw the purchase of Santa Fe Auto Sound in 1984 by Mark & Vicky Scrivner. This means the business would stay in the family, as the two purchased the company from Vicky’s parents, the shop’s original owners.
In 2000, Santa Fe Auto Sound finished a complete remodel of the building in an eye-catching “Santa Fe” Southwest theme. The shop was expanded to four installation bays, a state-of-the-art showroom and an expanded office area.
Today,
Santa Fe Auto Sound continues to provide Kansas City with the latest car audio technologies and services. In addition to comprehensive installation, repair, and custom fabrication services, we’re also proud to say we offer an expansive selection of cutting-edge products.
In 2018, current owner Ryan Arvidson took over after the retirement of Mark and Vicky Scrivner. Ryan has continued to carry on the tradition of Santa Fe Auto Sound being a local, family-owned business. Under his leadership, Santa Fe Auto Sound underwent a remodeling again in 2022—upgrading the showroom experience, installation bays, and adding new state of the art equipment.
In 2024, Santa Fe Auto Sound opened a second location in Grain Valley, Missouri. The new location offers a more convenient location for our customers on the East side of the Kansas City area, as well as offering a larger work area to better serve large vehicles and boats.
Although the original Mid-Town Auto Sound is long gone,
its spirit still lives on through our commitment to upholding the values established over 50 years ago. Then, now, and for as long we’re around, we’ll always pride ourselves on giving each of our customers a fully tailored experience based the unique needs and wants outlined in their project.
Since the days of Mid-Town Auto Sound, we have seen the car audio industry change from radios and antennas to high-tech stereos and digital technologies, giving today’s car owners more options than ever before to personalize their vehicles.
